What Will Your Philadelphia Bathroom Remodel Cost in 2016?

vanityI hate telling people what their Philadelphia bathroom remodel will cost…it is expensive.  Remodeling your bathroom costs more per square foot than remodeling your kitchen and we all know that kitchen remodeling is not cheap.  Giving the estimate used to be harder before I found Remodeling Magazine’s Cost vs. Value annual analysis http://www.remodeling.hw.net/cost-vs-value/2016/middle-atlantic/philadelphia-pa/.  This resource lets clients know how Teknika Design Group prices compare to the rest of Philadelphia bathroom remodelers.  These prices are for remodeling projects that use designers and contractors.  DIY (do it yourself) projects are excluded from this survey.   So let’s get into the details of the costs.

Two different designs are involved in Remodeling Magazine’s analysis: A mid-range and upscale remodel.

Midscale Philadelphia Bathroom Remodeling Specs

The midscale Philadelphia bathroom remodeling project is an update of an existing 5 by 7-foot bathroom.  This project includes replacing all the fixtures including the tub with a ceramic tile surround, new shower controls, standard white toilet, solid-surface vanity counter with an integral sink, a recessed medicine cabinet with a light, ceramic floors and vinyl wallpaper (this seems a little old to me, but those are the specs).

Upscale Philadelphia Bathroom Remodeling Specs

The upscale bathroom remodel expands an existing 35 square foot bathroom to 100 square feet.  We are going to relocate all the fixtures including a separate shower with ceramic tile walls and tile accent strip, recessed shower caddy, body spray and frameless glass enclosure.  Additions will include a whirlpool tub, stone countertop with 2 sinks, two mirrored medicine cabinets with lighting, a separate toilet area with a one-piece toilet (easier to clean) and a humidistat controlled exhaust fan.  A humidistat regulates the humidity in a room. The floors will be ceramic with a ceramic tile base molding.  Additional lighting will be added including a waterproof shower fixture.  The cabinetry will have a custom vanity.  Electric in-floor heating and heated towel bars will be among the upgrades.  This bathroom remodel is more my style.

Philadelphia Bathroom Remodeling Project Cost Comparison

For the midrange bathroom remodel the cost in 2016 is $20,771.  For the upscale remodel the cost is $62,827.   If you live in the city, your bathroom might be smaller and you might decide against adding more space, but your construction costs will always be higher.  Working in the city is harder, with parking, elevators, and really small spaces that require careful scheduling of workers.  For comparison purposes, in the entire Middle Atlantic region the midrange remodel is $2,000 less than in the Philadelphia area and nationally the cost is $3,000 less.  For the upscale remodel the Middle Atlantic region is $3,000 less than the Philadelphia area and nationally we are $5,000 more.  No wonder it is so hard to discuss price for a Philadelphia bathroom remodel.
