Why Would a Harvard MBA Want to Sell Kitchen Cabinets in Philadelphia?

You know that funny look you see when people think you are crazy?  I get that look a lot when I tell them I sell kitchen cabinets in Philadelphia and I love it.  Toportrait understand why, I need to share a little history.  It is 2005 and I am managing the consumer products division of a large manufacturing firm.  I was hired to pull this company out of the world of commodity pricing and to add value to the product, which we did.  However, the company still went chapter 11.  I was going to be out of job by the end of the year and I was the only breadwinner in my family.  On top of that my Mother had just died.  It was time for a major change.

I did not have an ah hah moment that I was destined to sell kitchen cabinets in Philadelphia.  What I did decide was that it was time to follow my entrepreneurial dream and buy a business.  I did not want to start a business from scratch since that would be more risky and I did have a family to support. So I searched for a successful business to buy that was consumer focused, involved some creativity and in an industry where my MBA could add value.  It took me two years and a couple of offers on other businesses when I met Steve Allen, one of the founders of Teknika Design Group, www.teknikadesigngroup.com.  We clicked and had a deal within 30 minutes.  Just like any relationship, you know when it works.

So how has it been selling kitchen cabinets in Philadelphia?  I have loved the job but of course I decided to follow my dream and opened in November 2008 at the peak of the Great Recession.  Other than a few tough years, it has been great.  My creative side has been satisfied as you can see by our portfolio pages http://www.teknikadesigngroup.com/Portfolio.py.  I am never bored, since I do just about everything in the business.  And the best part is that I love helping our clients creating that perfect kitchen for them.  The only frustration is how to get the word out that Teknika Design Group sells cabinets in Philadelphia and does it better than anyone else.  If you want more information on my history, please see my linked in page https://www.linkedin.com/profile/view?id=AAIAAAJth3oBv78YgFRJn68Ioe-GQKxb267QZdo&trk=nav_responsive_tab_profile .
